The Most Holy Trinity May 31, 2026

Posted : May-27-2026

Readings: Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 John 3:16-18

On this day on which we worship the mystery of the Trinity, we begin with Christ and we must listen to His own words. If we are to accept Jesus, then we must accept His words. The first reading today speaks to us about this God who reveals Himself, a God who wants to be with His people. This is a God who knows humans and still chooses to walk with them. This is a God who is truly interested in people and yet who accepts people with their defects.

Today’s second reading is obviously chosen for the last verse, which mentions God, the Son and the Spirit. This reflects a very early Christian formulation so that we cannot think that the mystery of the Trinity was dreamed up later! Today’s Gospel comes back to this basic and incredible reality: God wants to save the world, not condemn it.

At the practical level of our spirituality, we Christians are invited to maintain this faith in one God! We also are invited to pray to the Father just as Jesus Himself did. We are invited to pray to Jesus Himself (who says “The one who sees me also sees the Father”). And we are invited to invoke the Holy Spirit to come to us and to give us the inner strength and conviction to proclaim our faith by the way we live.

It is important for us to recognize as we worship the Trinity that the great witness to this mystery is our lives as Christians. We often stop at our words. But if our lives are not reflecting this relationship to Father, Son and Spirit, our words remain empty. This struggle to live in our lives what we believe in our hearts is the daily struggle of all who believe in any religion or faith. The spiritual life is this ongoing struggle to make real within our lives the words that we sometimes speak about belief.

Let us ask the Father today to help us understand His infinite love for us in Jesus. Let us ask Jesus to show us how to love one another. Let us ask the Spirit for the wisdom and strength to live what we believe.
